It's five minutes before 12 midnight. My eyes tell me to move to bed. Slowly, I tuck inside my pillow trying to sleep. But oh no. Something won't allow me to even close my eyes. Noise pollution. The noise tickles my ears. I hear a loud Bang! Boom! Bang!. Shouts! Music! I am trying to sleep because I'm sleepy now but I couldn't. I put my hands on my ears to cover them but to no avail. I can't stop it! The noise penetrates. Christmas is here. Christmas is really here. I can feel it even if I'm away from home.
I haven't experienced being in another country on Christmas. Although I have been in different places in the Philippines during this season of the year. But a friend who travels to different countries during the Christmas season, describes it this way. "There's no warm, lovely and joyous Christmas as the one in the Philippines." "Yours is a unique one. It can't be duplicated."
Really, there is something about Christmas in the Philippines that is so moving--despite our simplicity as a people, we still can create something worth revering. We still can make ourselves happy though we experience so much difficulties every now and then. May we value the uniqueness of this event even in our own hearts and minds and think about those who are saddened this time of the year.
